Employee Accommodations and Supports

Dartmouth strives to ensure full access and equal participation in all its offerings, including our workforce. When employees need alternate ways of access due to barriers in the environment, Dartmouth has developed a process to request accommodations by the employee and visitor communities.

Employee Accommodations

Dartmouth College is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities to ensure equal access to employment opportunities. The Equal Opportunity, Accessibility, and Title IX office is responsible for the provision of reasonable accommodations for faculty, staff, student employees, and applicants for employment who seek reasonable accommodation in their jobs or the job application process due to a documented disability.

The Associate Director for ADA Compliance receives requests for workplace accommodations and makes recommendations for all employees. Along with the ADA/504 Coordinator, the Associate Director for ADA Compliance also serves as a resource to departments and programs in providing accommodations to visitors and guests. This individual works with partners across the institution to promote an accessible and inclusive working environment.

A reasonable accommodation is any change or modification to the hiring process, job duties, the work environment, or the way things are usually done that enables a qualified individual with a disability to apply for a job, perform the essential functions of a job, and enjoy benefits and privileges of employment equal to those without disabilities, without causing significant difficulty or disruption in the workplace or posing a health or safety threat.

Employee Accommodation Request Process

The process to request reasonable accommodations at Dartmouth is intended to be simple. Employees are welcomed to contact the Dartmouth ADA Office with questions about this process at any time. Otherwise, the following steps describe the employee accommodation request process.

  1. Submit an Employee Accommodation Request Form online at https://dartgo.org/employee-arf. The form includes the ability to attach supporting third-party documentation. You can review the Documentation Guidelines for Dartmouth employees online at https://eoatix.dartmouth.edu/accessibility-inclusion/documentation-guidelines.

  2. Employees may request an accommodation and submit supporting documentation at any time. Please note that we work to consider requests as quickly as possible, but in some cases it may take two or more weeks to complete the necessary process. You may contact the Dartmouth ADA Office at ADA@dartmouth.edu with questions about the process at any time.

  3. The ADA Office will meet with the employee to discuss their accommodation request in greater detail.

  4. The ADA Office will review the information submitted during the meeting and via the accommodation request form, including self-report and documentation. All information will be considered on an individual, case-by-case basis in the order it is received. Staff from the ADA Office will follow up with the employee if any additional information is necessary. The ADA Office will also review the employee's current position description and consult with the employee's current manager/supervisor as part of the interactive process.

  5. An accommodation decision will be made and communicated to the employee. When an accommodation is put into place, it will also be communicated with the employee's current manager/supervisor with clear instructions to implement the accommodations.

  6. Employees and managers/supervisors may reach out to the ADA Office for support at any time.

It is the employee's responsibility to make their needs known and to provide the appropriate documentation to support the need for the requested accommodations. Employees may request new or different accommodations at any time. Employees and managers/supervisors are encouraged to immediately contact the Dartmouth ADA Office if they have any questions or concerns.
