Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972

Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. This includes sex-based harassment, sexual violence, pregnancy discrimination, discriminatory application of dress code policies, and more. Specifically, it states:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Policy (SMP)

Dartmouth's Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct Policy states that the College does not discriminate on the basis of sex in its educational programs or activities. Specifically, it prohibits the following types of conduct at Dartmouth:

  • Sex and gender-based discrimination, sexual and gender-based harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, dating violence, domestic violence, provision of alcohol or other drugs for purposes of prohibited conduct, and stalking.
  • Retaliation against an individual for the purpose of interfering with any right or privilege secured by Title IX or its regulations, or because the individual has made a report of prohibited conduct; filed a formal complaint; or testified, assisted, or participated or refused to participate in any manner in an investigation, hearing, or resolution of an alleged violation of this policy.
  • Exertion of power, supervision, or authority by one individual over another in relationships of a sexual or intimate nature.
