What is Title IX?

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 defines and ensures gender equity in education. The law prohibits all forms of sex-based and gender-based discrimination in any education program or activity that receives federal funding. It states:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

In line with Dartmouth's Principles of Community, the Office of Equal Opportunity, Accessibility, and Title IX (EOATIX) is dedicated to fostering a safe and respectful campus community where sexual and gender-based harassment, sexual assault, sex and gender-based discrimination, sexual exploitation, dating and domestic violence, provision of alcohol or other drugs for purposes of prohibited conduct, and stalking are not tolerated.

Pregnancy and Parenting: In addition to the protections above, Title IX also protects pregnant and parenting students, including students who were recently pregnant, students who adopt or foster children, and students who have experienced pregnancy loss, miscarriage, or abortion. For more information about how Title IX applies to pregnancy and parenting, please visit the U.S. Department of Education website. For Dartmouth-specific and local resources for pregnant and parenting students, including a map of lactation rooms on campus, please visit our Resources page.

If you or someone you know has been impacted by sexual or gender-based harassment, sex or gender discrimination, sexual exploitation, sexual assault, dating or domestic violence, or stalking, please reach out to our office at 603-646-0922 or equal.opportunity.accessibility.and.title.ix@dartmouth.edu, or visit us in person in Parkhurst Hall, Suite 05. The EOATIX office can provide you with resources, information, and support whether or not you choose to file a formal complaint.

If you have any questions or want to explore options for support and assistance, please contact the EOATIX office at 603-646-0922 or equal.opportunity.accessibility.and.title.ix@dartmouth.edu.
